Description:
Medium sized, strong sexual dimorphism in plumage and also in size. Rail-like wader, with broad, rounded wings and longish, downcurved bill. White or buff spectacles and braces. Adult female has maroon head and neck and dark greenish wing-coverts. Adult male and juvenile duller and have buff spotting on wing-coverts.
Distribution:
Vagrant in Gilgit-Baltistan with a single record from Gilgit district. Usually found in wide variety of wetlands; including marshes, lakes, river banks, boggy areas and grasslands. Essentially lowlands up to 1500m as a vagrant.
Behavior:
Probes soft ground like true snipes; also uses scything action of bill and head in shallow water. Chiefly crepuscular, and may also feed at night. Omnivorous. Invertebrates taken include insects, snails, earthworms and crustaceans; also seeds, including a variety of grasses, rice and millet.
